THE GRIT
HANDS, FEET AND HEART:
FULL-BODY FOOTBALL
THE 150 YEARS OF THE GOALKEEPER POSITION.
A HIGH-STAKES MISSION THAT
DEMANDS EXTREME FOCUS, AGILITY
AND LOTS OF TECHNIQUE.
AFTER ALL, SAVING A PENALTY KICK
CAN BRING JOY TO A WHOLE NATION.
Football was born a lot different from what we know today. It took eight years since the first official rules to create a defensive position that had the privilege of using the hands.
Prevent the goal. Yes. The villain that plays against your team, but that can also be the match hero. It depends on your point of view in the story.
To wear the number 1 jersey is to stand out in the team. There are special rules, different outfits – even a cap is allowed! – and a zone in the field made for their protection.
The goalkeeper’s grit is translated in a unique and constantly improved technique. It’s the position that requires the most training, greater focus, speed and flexibility. Playing by the goalposts is also knowing how to deal with the consequences of a simple moment of inattention.
They cannot fail. Is that so?
Pushing away, palming away, deflecting, catching... there’s a lot of verbs sportscasters shout to narrate the defense! However, the one thing that goalkeepers love to do, and only they can, is to hug the ball!
